Volunteers helping restore the Valla Rainforest

Valla Beach rainforest repaired

by Barbara Webster Senior Ranger - Neighbour and Community Relations - NPWS North Coast Region

A beautiful and rare rainforest community has been restored in the heart of Valla Beach in the Nambucca Valley. The area of littoral rainforest, listed as an “endangered ecological community” under the Threatened Species Conservation Act, has been repaired through a partnership between the Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC), an Aboriginal bush regeneration team and the local Valla community.

The site has received funding through the Northern Rivers Catchment Management Authority (NRCMA), and the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), both part of DECC. Contract work has been undertaken by the Ngambaga Goori Green Team with important follow up work by the Valla Beach Bushcare group and NPWS staff.

NPWS Senior Ranger (Pests) Mr Tim Scanlon said the new addition to Valla Nature Reserve is an important asset to the local community but is under threat from a number of serious weed species.

“Weeds controlled within the littoral rainforest include ornamental ginger (Alpinia zerumbed), lantana (Lantana camara), bitou bush (Chrysanthemoides moniliferea), winter senna (Senna pendula var.glabrata), morning glory (Ipomoea indica), coastal morning glory (Ipomoea cairica) and mickey mouse plant (Ochna serrulata),” Mr Scanlon said.

“The rainforest community features large brush box and strangler figs, woody vines, epiphytes and  ferns and provides important habitat for rainforest birds, gliders, possums, flying foxes and other native animals.

“Follow up weed control and bush regeneration must be continued in the reserve to ensure that the repair work is not undone. If you would like to help protect this beautiful area and become involved with Valla Beach Bushcare contact NPWS Coffs Jetty Office on (02) 6652 0900.”

A taste of the Nambucca

5/06/2008 4:00:00 AM
Three leading journalists from Sydney and Brisbane were treated to the ‘Taste of Nambucca’, held at Jacaranda Lodge on Friday (30th May 2008).

Undercover chef Wayne Lowe (the Shire’s economic development manager) cooked up a storm, using a selection of local produce.

05 June 2008 - 5:00AMGet Up and Go journalist Jill Varley dines with Valley of the Mist’s Dennis Ryan and Paula Walin-Bates from Nambucca Valley Phoenix during Friday night’s Taste of Nambucca promotion held at Jacaranda Country Lodge.

Wayne, along with members of the Nambucca Valley Tourism Association, Mid North Coast NSW Regional Tourism Organisation (MNCRTO), food producers and owners of the Jacaranda Country Lodge, entertained the journalists, who were here to learn more about the food and wine of the region.

The special guests were Food and Feature Writer for Australian Country Style Barbara Sweeney; senior writer for leading travel magazine Get Up and Go Jill Varley and Editor for Queensland Times, Metro, Natalie Gould.

Nambucca Tourism Association President Jon Holcombe said each journalist would write a number of stories gathered throughout the four-day tour, which took in Coffs Harbour, Nambucca, The Bellingen, Macleay Valley Coast and Greater Port Macquarie areas, to appear in their respective publications.

Mr Holcombe said the evening was part of a stepped-up promotion of tourism throughout the whole of the Nambucca Valley, backed with council’s commitment to maintain its tourism funding for the 2008 and 2009 year.

“Other activities undertaken in recent months include the tourism promotion at the annual Nambucca Show; the region’s planned presence at the Brisbane and Melbourne Caravan and Camping shows, distribution of more than 700 tourism information packs to 760 businesses throughout the Nambucca Valley, and development of new promotional material to showcase the Nambucca Valley further afield,” he said.

“We are proud of our efforts to date, but we need all the support we can get, to continue providing the highest level of tourism industry representation possible.”

ExtravaDance

Nambucca Guardian News

27 March 2008 - 5:00AMOrganising committee members of the Nambucca Valley’s latest youth project, ExtravaDance Margo McCarthy, Mark Scott, Janelle Williams and Esther Hughes, are encouraging

ExtravaDance has right beat to curb vandalism

A project designed to engage and stimulate the Nambucca Valley’s young people, and at the same time discourage vandalism and unsociable behaviour will be launched in Bowraville on April 11. ExtravaDance, described as an exciting youth culture project, would provide a forum for artistic expression, and enable young people to learn new skills, exchange ideas and showcase their talents, Bowraville Hinterland Festival secretary Esther Hughes said.

“Through this project we hope to achieve a revitalisation of towns throughout the Nambucca Valley, and that begins with young people,” she said. Formerly Back to Bowra, the Bowraville Hinterland Festival secured $35,000 for its ExtravaDance project through Festivals Australia.

“The project will provide a place for youth culture and entertainment at the new-look Bowraville Hinterland Festival,” Ms Hughes said. Ms Hughes described the community’s youth as its future. “They are going to take over from us one day. And, we want to utilise their talent; there is a lot of talent in this Valley.”

ExtravaDance workshops, which would be conducted from late July until the start of this year’s festival in early October, included hip hop dancing, rap music and video, graffiti art, and traditional Aboriginal dance and culture.

“This project will provide a forum for young people to express their ideas and concerns to their community in a positive way, through artistic expression,” Ms Hughes said. “The opportunity exists for collaboration between hip hop dance culture, rap, graffiti art and Aboriginal dance culture and art. The results will be highly anticipated with interesting and original works to be created.”

ExtravaDance co-ordinator Margot McCarthy believed if young people were engaged in programs such as organised graffiti art, they were less likely to vandalise. She said the community was keen to gain greater involvement from young people in the Valley.

“These projects also build their self esteem and give them direction in their life, appreciate the talents in the community and show them pathways for the future.”

Nambucca Shire councillor and Gumbaynggirr elder Martin Ballangarry believed the project would bring the whole community together in respect and understanding. “There are a lot of talented young people in our community; now they have the opportunity to show us what they can do.”

As well as those with artistic talents or interests, ExtravaDance also needs young people with an interest in web design to assist in technical and management areas of the event. The committee has invited all young members of the community – those aged between 12 and 25 years – to get involved in all aspects of the event. No experience is necessary.

The ExtravaDance project is for youth, by youth, and it’s all about making the Hinterland festival more fun for young people this year and in the years and festivals to come, Ms Hughes said.

The project will be officially launched on April 11 at the Bowraville Art Gallery in High Street with entertainment and refreshments.
